Ep 593 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter encourages you to not waste peoples’ time when you submit your resume.

Summary

So far today, I have been wasting my morning reading resumes that in no way, shape or form fit anything that are submitting them for.

There is one example. Resume I just received for an IT director's job. The cover email they sent was terrific. I must say, this person writes a great cover letter.

The only problem is that the resume doesn't back it up. So I write this cover letter, he tells me about all this wonderful work that is done at the last firm, and in the last industry he worked in. He has been consulting since then. Then, you open up the resume and discover that he has worked as a consultant for the last 10 years (that is absolutely fine). However, he summarized that last 10 years in 5 lines of which 2 of those lines were less than half of a line.

Let's just say it is for lines to cover 10 years of experience.

Do you think my client will actually believe this cover letter? I know I don't. I had a lot of smoke alone at me and my time wasted because this person is too lazy to actually give me some data about what he did, probably because he knows that will knock them out of consideration because it was nonsense work.

For you out there, be considerate of other people and their time. By being considerate I'm asking you not to spam your crap at me.

If you have the skills needed for the job, demonstrated the fit in your resume. If you don't, don't spam your resume. You are nothing more than a Cialis spammer at that point.

Video Interview Mistakes

A few of the mistakes job hunters uniquely make when they do video or Skype interviews.

Summary

I wanted to talk with you today about a video interview mistakes that I've noticed recently and a few that I remember from the past. This is going to be relatively direct, blunt and cantankerous, but is designed to help you get past the video interview without any the distractions that might cause the hiring manager to not focus in on you.

I'm not going to speak about things that relate the general interviews like not being prepared or not being aware of the job that you are interviewing for. I'm going to focus specifically on video interviewing.

The 1st thing is dressing inappropriately. A T-shirt doesn't work. Being that casual from the waist up doesn't work. Yes, I have my, "COACH" had on today, but this is a different scenario than applying for a job.
If you dress inappropriately, you are making a mistake.

If there is a mess behind you, you are making a mistake.

If you haven't addressed the fact that you have a young child or a pet in the house that might interrupt you, if you haven't done that in an effective way, you are hurting your candidacy.

If you do the interview in a coffee shop… Not a good move. You can't control the backdrop for the noise there.

If you keep too many of the windows open, and cause your system to degrade so that it affects your audio or video, it will affect your performance and how you are received.

If you talk like a New Yorker (much too quickly) and you don't make connection with the person that you are interviewing with because you are just racing to get ideas out, you risk turning people off that way.

If you don't treat it as being as important as an in-person interview, if you don't focus sufficiently on the interviewer, because you’re scattered from so much stuff going on in your day so that you are not able to focus, you are making a mistake.

I want to address a few of these points and if there are others, leave a message and share them. You will help other people.

When the Recruiter Won’t Negotiate | Job Search Radio

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses what to do if the headhunter says they cannot negotiate the Job offer.

Summary

What sometimes happens is the recruiter extends the offer and you really aren't happy with the number. What you're basically saying to them is, "I need more money." They turn around and say, "There is no negotiation." A lot of people by that bull.

There are sometimes situations where that is true but not a lot of them. Let me give you an example.

I had one negotiation not long ago when the client told me point blank that they had blown your budget to get the number that was offered. All along, the client the talked about one number that was too low for the candidate and they up the offer, still too low for the candidate. I was is much as they could go They told me that point blank.

The trick to dealing with the recruiter who says that there is no negotiation is to asked them, "Why is that? Why is there no negotiation?" Make them justify it to you.

They may tell you exactly what I just said. "The client went to bat for you. They were unable to offer more. Etc."

The follow-up to that is, "I'm just going to call the client because am not really happy with the money."

"NO! NO! NO! NO! You'll blow the deal!"

What they are trying to do is close you on the number that was offered.

If you do choose to call client, obviously, don't start off in an indignant snit, the ideas to say something like, "I want you to know I appreciate the offer. It is a little lower than what I was looking for. Could you do a touch better?" The idea is to get them to up the number a little bit more. Do this around the recruiter, rather than through them, because this recruiters obviously represented themselves in a way that suggests that they might've been deceptive and unwilling to go to bat for you. They are more concerned with closing the deal. Having you be happy. It suggests that they are more interested in maintaining the relationship with the client than satisfying you.

Again, at the end of the day, you may want to accept the offer so you don't want to walking indignantly and act like a jerk and be immature in your conversation with them.

"Thank you so much for extending the offer. I'm really excited about the possibility of joining. Frankly, the salary was a little bit more than I was hoping for. Could you do a touch better?"

"How much better?"

Tell them. They're not going to do $20,000 better. There going to do a few dollars better at most. Be prepared that if you ask for something crazy, they're going to start backing out of the offer and you will be left with nothing. Don't get foolish. If you do have that conversation, keep it simple and let them know, "I really want to accept. I would really appreciate if you could do a touch better."

Final Interview? Here’s a Big Reminder | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

EP 856 There are so many mistakes people make job hunting that are fatal. This reminder is one designed to head off a very painful one.

Summary

If you are on a final interview, and you know you been scheduled for final interview big a corporate recruiter has told you, maybe a third party recruiter has told you, wherever is you found yourself on a final interview, I know from my experience doing search, there is a tendency for people to ease up. They ease up, not just simply with the interviewer, but with the rest of their search, too because they think they've got it in the bag.

The thing I want to remind you about today is that rather than focusing in on this 1 job, I would encourage you to keep going pedal to the metal, really driving hard, even though you are scheduled for all final. You see, what I have found over the years is that sometimes, that dark or situation, that situation out of the blue shows up that's even better, but does become apparent to you but you keep going out on interviews.

I can't tell you the number of times that people I was contacted about a job with tell me, "I've got a final." I would tell them, "Terrific! Take your final interview. I have a client that I think is actually better than this 1." I would go through the reasons why and they'll be absolutely right on the money.

"No, "they would whine. "I think I'm done with job hunting." How costly that was. For some of these people and their careers.

You need to be driving hard all the time. I spoke about the importance of networking and continue to network while you're in a new job because, the fact of the matter is, you don't want to be lurching from one job search to another without a networking place, right? Well, from a job search perspective, you don't want to assume that this final interview is finished, closed, in the bag. You always want to be prepared just in case and because another situation can come in that is even better. Pay you more money! Be a better job! How do you know unless you meet with the firm?

I'm not telling you to take that job. I have no idea what the job is. But I'm telling you that sometimes the final interview doesn't work out because you're competing with someone else. As a result, you feel crushed because you let go of a number of things. You keep interviewing. You if someone is inviting you back for a 2nd or 3rd interview, you go! If you choose to take the one associate with the final, great! It's done!

He you imagine what it's like if you start canceling appointments until the recruiter, "I'm close to something else with another firm, " and then have to go back to them... Or have to start from the very beginning of your search.

My reminder is that you just go out and keep interviewing. Keep networking! Keep on interviewing. Until you have the offer letter, until you've walked in the door, ... Better to be safe than sorry. There is no harm here. If you keep going out on interviews.

How Do I Crack an Interview Without Preparation? (VIDEO)

He was 1 of those fun questions I get asked from time to time. Ready? How do I correct in interview without preparation?

I will treat this as a person who is graduating college, rather than a full-time employee already because, if you are in the work world, you already know you don't want to take the lazy way out. Let me just talk to this person very bluntly.

The way you do it is with luck. If you have good karma. If you're fortunate enough that you have studied well and know your subject cold, then you have a shot. Remember, just because you know your subject cold. According to the textbooks doesn't mean that you know an interview with this firm. The fact of the matter is, and I'm going to be this blunt with you, you cannot correct the interview. You cannot hack the interview without, by definition, doing preparation.

At the end of the day. Are you better off, at least spending 45 minutes to an hour looking at the LinkedIn profile of the person you will be speaking with, having a sense of their background, going to the website of the firm, perhaps looking at a few of the profiles of people working in the department that you would be working in to get a sense of what they are doing and what their backgrounds are? Maybe you practice some answers to predictable questions you might be asked?

How tough is this really that you're going to be such a fool that you want to do nothing in order to get a job? It begs the question of why they should want to hire you? Doesn't answering that question requires some amount of preparation?

I'm being blunt with you because someone needs to smack you across the face and wake you up because if you want to be lazy, you are going to get lazy person's results. If you're going to put an effort to try to become a master of something-- 10,000 hours of expertise and you didn't get it in college, 10,000 hours to become a master. I done recruiting for more than 40 years and I know this subject cold.. You cannot do it unless you are lucky.

So get to work and stop bullshitting yourself and do what you need to do otherwise, be prepared for the consequences. Maybe you'll luck out, but you probably won't..
