Hedge Fund Brainteasers: If You Had to Eliminate a State, Which One Would It Be?

EP 857 There is one way to answering this seemingly insane question.  I offer 3 choices.

Summary

This 1 I learned from John Kador who has written a book called, "Acing The Brainteaser Interview." Apparently, this is one that is asked of Microsoft. The question goes, "If you have to eliminate 1 of the 50 states, which one would you select?" Then, they ask you to get specific reasons why you chose the specific state that you did.

I want to start by saying that there is no right answer. There are lots of different ways that you can approach this. The idea is to come up with a logical explanation that doesn't make you sound like you want to be an assassin or mass murderer. For those of you in the South who hate Northerners or are insulting to people from a particular state for whatever the reason is, don't start talking about how you would REALLY ENJOY watching (I'll pick New York as an example). New York just disappear from the map. Or California in watching all those people die in an earthquake. Not real smart.

Think in terms of the style of how you answer will give you 3 ways that you can. Again, credits to the book here.

John suggests building up suspense by providing some logic 1st. Obviously, this is Microsoft to skip the state of Washington. If you are interviewing for a job in New Jersey, don't answer, "New Jersey isn't really valuable." Don't start over the state that you are in and eliminate that. You will annoy some people.

Instead, he suggests discussing the logic behind the choice and think out loud. Don't start with the name of the state but build some suspense by walking the interviewer through the logic and see where you end up. Humor, some tongue-in-cheek remarks, all work well.

He suggests, "I don't want to be responsible for eliminating actual people. I would eliminate the political entity of the state by ceding it to Canada. Maybe a state that shares a border with them like North Dakota or Vermont. What I still be able to visit?" That becomes answer number 1 , which involves ceding the state to Canada. You can do the same thing with Mexico. "Would anyone miss New Mexico? With the Mexicans be happy to have New Mexico as a part of Mexico?" See where that one works.

Another approach is calling for the elimination of estate by combining it with 1 of its neighbors. Maybe Connecticut could annex Rhode Island. North and South Dakota could be combined to form the state of Dakota.

Lastly, "I would eliminate the state of Wyoming." You talk about how Wyoming is the least populous state in the country and all this people to be relocated to a theme park on the Las Vegas strip. That takes the tongue-in-cheek approach.

Obviously, the 1st 2 are little bit easier to work with and you may not be comfortable doing "The Wyoming Dance." Understand again that there is no wrong answer. You may sit opposite someone who presents is completely humorless and the idea is to just walk them through the logical choice. That will help you win the answer to that question.

Hedge Fund Brainteasers: You Are Shrunk to the Size of a Nickel

EP 851 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter provides you with an answer to this old time Google interview question

Summary

I want to do another tough interview. 1 of those brainteasers. I think you'll find it fun... Like most brainteasers it really isn't all that tough..

You are shrunk to the height of the nickel and your masses proportionally reduced so as to maintain your original density. You are then thrown into an empty glass blender. The blender will start moving in 60 seconds. What do you do?

Ready for the answer?

You jump.

You see, the key is in the density. Once you are at your original density, you have the strength to be able to job. Thus, you have the ability to jump out of the blender and beat the crap out of the interviewer who put you in there.

The “Two Coins in a Box” Brainteaser | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

EP 844 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter offers an answer to this clever little brainteaser.

Summary

I have another 1 of those fun interview questions that is designed to trip you up.

A box contains 2 coins. One is a double-headed quarter and the other is an ordinary quarter, heads on one side and tails on the other. You drove 1 of the coins from the box and it is heads. What is the probability that the other side shows heads, also?

The 1st time I thought of an answer, my instinct was to think that there was a 50% probability. I paused and paid more attention to the question. I then realized that that couldn't be possible. Here is why.

When the coin is drawn there are 4 possibilities. There is heads and heads; that is one possibility. And that choice appears twice because there are 2 possibilities with a double headed coin. There is heads and tails and tails and heads.. They are telling you right away that you are seeing heads so that 4th option isn't there (tails and heads).

There are 3 possible alternatives. Both of them involving double heads 1 is a heads and a tail. So the correct answer is that there is a two thirds probability that the other side is also going to be a heads. That's because the 4th 1 was eliminated because you drew heads right away. Right away

What They Want to See at a Final Interview | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

EP 843 There are a few qualities firms want to see at a final. It isn’t hard. Pay attention and deliver.

Summary

I want to talk with you today about final interviews and what they want to see from you at the final interview. I want to be clear that I'm not good be covering what you want to be doing per se. You know you have to practice. That should be given. I look at it is having 3 primary "C's. "If you seen some of my early stuff, you would've seen that I talk about how a firm looks for competence, self-confidence, character, chemistry and charisma; all of which add up to personal leadership.

Here, I have it narrowed down and I want you to think in terms of CONGRUENCE, CONFIDENCE and CONNECTION as being the 3 primary things that they are looking for.

So what is congruence? You told him certain things before and what you're going to tell them today is going to be congruent or in line with what you said previously. I don't want you to tell him the same stories over and over again unless they want to investigate a particular episode. Think of a new story that you can tell them that they haven't heard before. It's kind of like if you watch the same TV show over and over again, yeah, is familiar but you want to see a new episode after a while, right? Be prepared with the new episode. If they want to investigate further on something old, you can talk about the old episode that is attracted them to you with the question, but you can continue by saying, "You know, it reminds me of another time…" Thus you can introduce the new story.

Confidence. They want to look across from you and find someone that they don't have to worry about. If you are nervous, if you are bashful, if you act as though you will become a slave to them, if you don't interview with them like you are an adult talking with your peer, they're not going really feel confident in you. They're going to see you like you're relatively junior individual. I don't care if you actually look relatively junior individual or senior talent. The idea is you are talking to an equal.

I don't care if they are 30 years older than you, you want to be talking confidently with them without being arrogant, without being annoying, without acting like (I will talk to those of you in your 20s)… You know what it's like when you're being dismissed or being treated dismissive way. You don't want to instigate that with your behavior. They may have a bias that you pick up on but I want you to have the choice as to whether you join.

The 3rd “C” is connection. You want to connect with them and 1 of the best ways to do that is to speak to them with a smile on your face. Engage with them. "Does that make sense to you?" “Am I being clear enough?" “I just want to make sure I am not losing you here." Obviously, you don't asked this in obvious place where you wouldn't lose them; that is insulting to them. You know what it's like when you go off the rails a little bit you're not sure if you've lost them?

“I just want make sure you're following me here."

“Yeah yeah, I'm following you."

Connect with them. Talk with them like an equal. Smile at times. Putting twinkle in your eyes! You would have that sort of spirit in your eyes and your behavior. The more they talk, the more they like you. I'm going to speak with the senior people here. You might ask about the org structure and where you would fit in. What is the upside for the role? Who is going to know about your work? What kind of visibility will you have? Things along those lines.

When push comes to shove, obviously you have to demonstrate competence but going beyond that, you want to illustrate congruence with what you have told them before and maybe expand upon it a little bit, self-confidence, and make a connection with the people that you meet. These are the keys to a final interview.

Are You Interviewing? | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

EP 842  This is a variation on the question of, “Where have you been on interviews?”  Here. I explain what the intention is behind the question.

Summary

This is 1 of those questions is a variation on another one that I have addressed previously. This is the question of, "Are you interviewing?" It's a variation on the, "Where have you been interviewing," question. I want to speak to this 1 because really depends on who you're talking to as to what the intention of the question is.

Let me start off with third-party recruiters. With a contingency recruiting firm, you'll be asked this question for several reasons.
1. If you have been interviewing, they may turn around and say, "Where have you been on interviews so far?" They may be trying to find out have you been to the client, job leads of other organizations that are trying to hire so that you release that information to them and then they start reaching out to those firms to see if they can wind up being positions to work on and earn money from.
2. Another thing there trying to do is to see how far along you are in the process. So if you tell them that you have met with 14 firms, had 3 finals and you are close to 2 offers, they're probably going to hit the delete key on your resume when they are finished talking with you. That's because they will see any point in doing anything.

So one, shall we say, slimy approach to asking the question and the rest are pretty innocuous.

When an employer asks, they are obviously not good be contacting firms for job leads. What they are trying to do is (1) find out if you are aggressive job hunter. Companies have a bias against aggressive job. Their belief is that people who are actively looking for work are less attractive than those who, shall we say, are recruited. If they have contacted you and are asking this question, you might simply say, "I am not aggressively looking for work. But when you approach me, this is an interesting opportunity. Frankly, since the time you initially contacted me, 2 other firms have approached me as well" that you can talk about where you are with those firms.

Part of the reason that employer asks the question is to see how much time they might have before you have to make a choice, whether they can keep interviewing or, shall we say get off the pot and extended offer or move more quickly. You see, they like you (that's part of what the communication is), but they want to see if they can date others for a while before getting married.. You follow what I'm getting at here?

Recognize that their intent is to get a sense of how much time they have with you before they risk losing you. If you say that you have nothing else going on, they can sit back and relax a little bit, knowing that they can interview for a while. Let us know what's going on with you.,

"If anything changes, give us a call. We want to know. "

Most of the time when that happens, they have already seen a bunch of other people and never come back and make the offer.

However, if you say, "Since the time he reached out to me, a couple of other firms have reached out to me as well. I have had some really good interviews and there are some interesting opportunities out there," that will get them motivated to take more action.

Now, if you apply for job and submit a resume, this won't always work obviously, because you have indicated that you are an active job hunter. Thus, all, they are trying to do is see where you are in your process. If they are on a 1st interview and you are on a fifth interview somewhere, there are 1 of 2 ways that they might respond:
(1) accelerate the process
(2) hit the delete key because they know they cannot move fast enough.

I have found over the years that many firms where I mentioned to them that I had found this individual that really fits your role very well, but they are only 3rd or 4th interview and there are some folks who are interested, they never really move. So, caveat emptor. Recognize the impact of what you say and what the firm's motivation is.

Why Have You Had So Many Jobs?

EP 827 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter offers several different ways to answer this question depending on when in your career this occurred.

Summary

Today, I want to offer up 1 of those tough interview is that show up from time to time. The question is, "So, I want that your resume and you have had a lot of jobs. Why be had a lot of jobs?"

You can understand from an employer's perspective that they are hiring someone and they help is like a marriage that last for a long long time and you look like someone who, when the going gets tough, you get going… Out the door.

There are several different ways to approach answering this question. The 1st 1 is, if it happened early in your career, you can point to the fact that when you were young, you didn't have the perspective that you do now for the hills you can acknowledge that and that you wised up. Somewhere along the line.

"I now understand that persistence is sometimes more important than the sometimes alleged again and I start to tough through situations when they got more difficult. "

The 2nd possible way of answering this question is if, some of these changes were because your consultant and you laid out your resume in a way where you just listed each of your individual engagements there and not the consulting firm names, you can very simply say, "Many of what you see, there are consulting assignments where I was only expected to be there for 5 or 6 months. As a matter of fact, some of the engagements ran long, because they like my work so much that they kept me around longer than the original contract was for." That becomes the 2nd way you can address.

A third way, and this is a variation that may apply to more recent economic times, you can point to the economy. "I intended to stay with each of these firms for a long time. However, the economy decimated sectors of our business. Eventually, our firm, in an effort to survive, needed to cut people. I was 1 of the last ones in and became 1 of the 1st ones out. As much as people like my work, and if you check my references you'll find that, I like the work of everyone else in the group and became very much like 'eeny meeny miny mo' when they made their decisions. It wasn't a reflection of my capabilities. It wasn't a reflection on my work. I was told they will provide great references. They basically chop the newest one.

That's how I would handle it from 3 different angles based upon how it was in your career.

Add Up All the Numbers from 1 to 100 | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

Ep 816 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter explains the trick to answering this question. 

Summary

I love hedge fund brainteaser questions. NOT! But they are used. We can spend a lot of time talking about whether they are valid or not, but they are used. You have to be prepared for them.

Today's question is 1 of those fun ones. It's a math problem.. "And all the numbers between 1 and 100. What do you get?"

You can't just sit there and have a mental column in your head and start going, "one, 3,6, 10 …" There is just no time for that. They're not going to just sit there while you go through this routine. So, what's the answer? How do you figure this out?

If you think about it every individual member has an opposite reciprocal number that adds up to 100. For example, 99 and 1. 98 and 2. 97 and 3. On and on and on.

When you realize that there are 50 pairs that had to up to 100, you have 5000 (remember, you have 100 and 0). But, there is one number that doesn't have a parent – – 50.

So the answer becomes 5050.

So, again, there's always a trip to the question that you are asked, especially with the math ones. So this is the trick for any all the numbers from 1 to 100.

What Qualities Do You Look for in a Boss (Manager)? | No BS Job Search Advice

EP 815 I discuss how to answer this typically second interview question?

Summary

I am 1 of those tough interview questions that is designed to ... I'm not sure what it's designed to do. But the fact of the matter is it's not that tough; however, in the heat of the 2nd interview, (occasionally, it is asked in the 1st), it surprises people because they are not prepared and there is nothing that gives them a context for the question... It kind of stumps them.

The question basically is, "What qualities do you look for in a manager (in a Boss)?" Things along those lines.

Again, not a tough question. Let's break it down.

You start off by going, "I work well with the manager who treats all all sorts of people with courtesy and respect. The manager who values ideas and input from the people. They don't necessarily have to follow those ideas but looks for the input, sorts it out and gives you the impression that matters to them what I think."

"I also work well with the manager is very clear about what is expected of me. What my responsibilities will be. What sort of boundaries exist, work. Someone who can streamline my area so that they remove roadblocks and barriers from doing my job.. Some of the trust me and thus things that I don't need a lot of supervision but also expects I'm going to come to them for advice or help or input or if I'm struggling. I also think availability is helpful." You get where I'm coming from? These are legitimate qualities anyone would expect from a manager. You give them back this kind of an answer.

The key thing is the sound like you are thinking of your answer and that is not rehearsed answer. If you make your answer sound like it is a checklist, is going to sound like you planned for this. If you listen to my answer, you'll notice that might sound a little bit reflective. That's really the key to it.

Then there's one more piece so don't think you're off the hook here. The extra piece is to flip the question and ask, "What is your style like?"

Let's be practical here. Do you think anyone is going to tell you, "I'm kind of abrupt and they don't really care what my people think. It's your problem to get rid of the barriers to your success and I don't really care what you think about or what your thoughts are." Do you think it was good to say that to you? Of course, not.

There going to feedback exactly what they have heard you say and that will help hook them into you. To say anything to the countries and make them feel defensive. If you shared what's important to you that something that they can mirror back.

Again, lack of preparedness is the biggest issue with this question. And forgetting to flip the answer to the manager or future boss and asking them what their style is like is the 2nd mistake. You always have to do that flip at the end. It will help nail the higher.
