Here is another 1 of those tough interview questions that confuses a lot of folks. Like most of them, it is very easy question… Today’s question is, “Al plane is flying from Paris to New York at 500 mph. There is another plane that is flying from New York to Paris at 450 mph. They meet over the Atlantic Ocean. Which plane is closer to Paris?”
They are in the same place. They are equidistant from Paris.
After all, they MET over the Atlantic Ocean. They are in the same place. We aren’t talking about a crash. They are in the same location over the Atlantic.

I’m Being Interviewed by Someone Much Younger! | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

EP 932 The anniversary show AND I explain how to handle an interview situation where the hiring manager is much younger than you.

Summary

I want to talk with you about age discrimination, 1 of the most common forms of discrimination in hiring.As a search professional, I hear the lament . . . And I've heard from the time when I was 1st entering the business was 20 years old . . . "I being discriminated against because of my age. I'm X number of years old I was interviewed by someone who is much younger than me. I said no chance of getting the job."

That may have been true. I also want to say that discrimination takes a whole host of forms , including your assumption that this person was going to discriminate against you and that the 20-year-old like I once was is being interviewed by the 45-year-old who thinks that in no way, shape or form does this person ever bring in the head. Discrimination takes a whole host of forms .

Be that as it may, you are the person who is my age (I'm in my 60s) interview by the person in their 30s or 40s. You have that feeling in the pit of your stomach that this interview is dead in the water before it even gets underway. I would just want to say to you that you may be wrong. You may actually be someone who they are really interested in for the very reason that you have the experience.

My advice he was really very simple. Make no assumptions. Walk in there and know that you may not get the job. You may not get the job NOT because of your age But because you did not perform well on the interviews. You may not demonstrate all the brilliance that you have and the experiences and template that you have in the course of your interview. That's not their fault; that's because you gave up proactively walking in the door.

Your goal when you walk in the door. In the example that I gave with the person who might be 20 or 30 years your junior is to make them fall in love with you, just like you would be trying to do if you're being interviewed by someone who is your own age.

Invariably, there are circumstances where the younger hiring manager asks the question that translates into, "can you take direction from me?" The correct answer is, "Of course. I've done it before. I've taken direction for people younger than I. Statistically, you must admit the probability is I'm always going to be working for someone younger than me. This was never an issue for me, but I've always recognize that people are concerned about it going in. I have no issue with it."

You can be just as casual in his blunt this I was in that answer. Also say that there is another variation on This where you can say, "I have no problems. As a matter of fact, I have worked with younger hiring managers before. At times, they appreciate that I have the experiences That I do because they see me as someone that they can come to for advice, who is not going to stick their noses in my business, allow them to make the mistakes, but is available as a resource if they need it."

Notice what you are doing you saying, "I can mentor, but I'm not going to push my mentoring on you."They can come to you as an advisor because you have certain experiences that may be of value to them. I don't answer is good. You can combine those answers for easily.

Again, my suggestions are always do the things that are comfortable for you and allow yourself to just be magnificent in the interview, even though you are concerned that this person is going to reject you because of your age.

Again, you may not be the person that they hire, but you may be the trailblazer makes it possible for the next person to get hired, all because of your performance. So, do a masterful job.

SUMMARY
I want to speak with you today about ending an interview extremely well and extremely powerful. In this particular approach, you will know very clearly how the firm sees you–whether they see was qualified or unqualified for the role. He will leave no mystery whatsoever. It also serves the purpose of leveling the playing field between you and the hiring firm.
Invariably, there is a section of the interview where they ask, “So, do you have any questions for us?” I have covered this in previous videos about how to best answer that question.
Now, is the interview is winding down there are a few more questions I want to encourage you to ask. This is past the point were you talking about the job or their assessment criteria once you are onboard; this is really at the wine down phase.
1. Do you see any gaps in my experience or employment that you believe I need to fill? Asking this will give you insights into how they judge you for this position.
2. Are there any reasons that you judge I’m not qualified for this role? This is the magic question because if you have any of that experience, you can cover this point by saying, “Oh! I’m sorry I didn’t cover that in one of my earlier answers. This is what I’ve done related to that. Would you like to ask me more about that because I want to make sure you have all the information that you need.”
3. Now that you’ve had a chance to interview me, are there any reservations that you have about putting me into this role? Again, this gives you an opportunity to address any concerns that they have so that, in this way, you have had a chance to take your “tennis racket” and send it back over the net to them, make them ask more questions, investigate more fully. You have to remember that, sometimes, the interviewer is not particularly skilled and has a finite amount of time where they are evaluating and assessing you. They miss things! This gives you ways of finding out there thinking at the end of an interview so that, at the end of the day, you know exactly where you stand.

Building Charisma

Building Charisma | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

EP 900 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses the importance of charisma when you interview and explains how you can increase yours.

Summary

I want to talk with you today about building charisma.  If you know some of my work, you know that I believe that there are certain number of qualities that firms look for when they hire. Competence is one.  Self-confidence, character, chemistry, CHARISMA… All of which add up for me as personal leadership. How do you add to your charisma? Why is charisma important? Often, it is a huge differentiator between one candidate and another, and it draws people in, emotionally when you interview.

Today, I want to help you work on your charisma By building some of the techniques that will allow you to be more charismatic in interviews.

The 1st thing is preparation.  An unprepared person who is "winging it," has a degree of uncertainty about them.  You cannot be uncertain when you interview.  You have to display complete mastery of the subject on an interview.  So, you have to take the time to prepare.  After all, athletes do it.  The greats do it.  Do you think A public speaker hasn't walked out and rehearsed that speech before they have given it? Why do you believe that you can just "wing it" and do well on every interview that you do? Even if you are not hired, you want to create positive impressions because you never know when you will run into these folks again.

Preparation is a huge part of presenting yourself in a charismatic way.  Another thing is asking great questions.  If you just arrived with little more than superficial questions, you are not going to draw them into you.  One of my beliefs, and I've said this in another video I've done, is that the more they talk, the more they like you. You want to get them talking as much as possible Because of their belief becomes that you are interested.  While they are talking, you want to appear completely engaged in what you are listening to.

You'll find this next one comes hand-in-hand with energy.  Energetic people present themselves in charismatic ways and people who use their hands when they talk also appear charismatic.  In using your hands to speak, I want to be clear that you never block your face.  You go to about middle-of-the-chin level when you use your hands because anything that you do to block your face becomes distracting. But keeping it to about middle of the chin level, no higher, emphasizes points and, thus, demonstrate greater strength and passion for what you do.

That brings us to passion.  I know it's easier to be passionate about things that you love, whether it's hobbies or family that you have huge joy about.  However, you have to demonstrate about your career, too.  Being passionate as you talk about your work is incredibly important.

Finally, optimism.  People are not drawn to, people are not magnetic, if they send down and pessimistic.  If you talk to downers, don't you just want to get away from them?  Downers – – people who are completely negative, point fingers at others, complain, piss and moan (Excuse my language, folks)… You want to be someone who draws people into you, who has a magnetic quality… That's what charisma is all about.  That backdated quality that makes you attractive to others.

Employing some of these techniques is a huge way of making people want to hire you because they want to be around you.  Being flat, being dull, speaking in a monotone for 30 minutes just makes people want to go to sleep.  Is that what you want to do?  Of course, not.  You want to be that charismatic individual that, even if they turn down, it's hard for them to turn you down because they really like you.

Proper Preparation . . . | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

EP 920 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter encourages you to act like an actress, actor, or athlete before your next job interview. 

Summary

I want to give you some no BS job search advice for how to prepare for your next job interview. Hear me out. I know most of you are going to take the lazy approach to help you get through some of you will actually put in the effort to excel.

Let me start by saying that when actor or actress walks out of the stage to recite those lines, they didn't just read the lines in the past, what they've done is command stage before an audience to perform those lines as though they were in front of the audience. When and athlete comes out of the field for a game, whether it is football, basketball, whatever the sport is they have practice in a number of times in front of people who are there to critique and evaluate them in order to ensure that they are performing to the maximum capabilities. You are going to need to do the same thing.

You may say, "I know how to answer these questions," but you don't know the nuances of how you are answering them and there are only a few ways to find out. One bit of homework for you – – there are certain predictable questions that everyone is asked in an interview. What might you be asked? Write down your answers.

Here's the fun part. What I want to do is to get two friends together for a mock interview one person is going to ask the question. The other one is going to take the phone out and record you while you answer the questions. Have them stand behind the interviewer so they are looking directly at you. There are a few things that you want to notice when answering questions.

1. What you actually say.
2. You also want to notice your bad habits so that you can work at correcting them.

Some people think their maintaining eye contact but really aren't. Some people have lots of "uhs," and pauses and "ums," and "you knows". They may stagger when the answer questions. Isn't that better to correct before you actually interview through practice and rehearsal than at the interview. When you walk out the door and go, "Oh, well. I will be better next time." You wasted everyone's time and blown an opportunity that you may have really wanted.

Don't just shrug it off to a learning experience athlete. Some shrug it off to a learning experience. There prepare before they get out on the field, the when they get out of the court. Actresses and actors don't flub line and call it a learning experience. The audience would be annoyed at them. They are in the theater watching them. Having spent good money getting an amateur performance. Do you want to be seen as an amateur? Of course, not. You want to be the position where you have the opportunity to choose whether or not to join this firm for this job and not leave it up to them to make that decision on their own.

Get out there with a video camera. Get 2 friends together. It could be a wife, husband, partner, friend… Whoever it is… It could be a person in your networking group. It could be your coach. It could be someone they know. Whoever it is, get them there and videos you so that you can listen to your answers and watch your bad habits. This way, you can correct them before the question very much.

By the way, even if you get the job, you may question money with a lower offer because they don't think you're quite that good and you are good enough. You never want to be seen as "good enough." You want to be seen as the 1st choice. Period. The best choice. Period. Not the "good enough" choice because there never compensated quite as well as the best one.
