I received a message today from someone who posed a scenario asked different opinion. He has done a phone interview and is told that it will is a technicality for the client wanting to meet him. The recruiter tells him he needs to pay the airfare and travel and that if he is offered the job and takes it, he will be paid back for the trip.
Let’s read between the lines. You lay out the money. If you get the job, I will pay you back. If you don’t get the job, you will get nothing.
When he asks about what happens if they don’t select me, the recruiter says that this is for sure them to stop talking negatively. Like I said, the recruiter is going to pay him back if he gets the job and if he doesn’t get the job, he is out of luck.
Everything sounds find any books a flight from one city to Atlanta and rents a car. The night before, he goes to a friend’s wedding and he is on a 3 AM flight the next morning. Let’s get practical. He knows the guy for long time. It’s a big decision to go to the wedding, but he is only 3 AM flight so his at the airport at [1:30] AM. He is sleep deprived when he lands; he has an interview going on for in the long and the short of it is, he doesn’t get the job. His body just wants to get to sleep and he didn’t perform on the interview.
He tells the recruiter what happens. I want to explain it to the company. “I don’t even care about the expenses.” The company doesn’t want to talk to him; the recruiter has no interest. The company doesn’t want to talk to him. At the end of the day, he asks this question, “Is it a good deal to go on these fly outs prepaid? Does it come across stronger to say that I want half the money up front? Is it worth taking the risk of the client not paying up front?” He is looking for a way to protect themselves.
Here’s my thinking.
1. If you have a wedding the night before, it isn’t like the wedding wasn’t on the schedule when the interview showed up, right? You knew about that before hand and you miscalculated. As a result, you will that going out sleep deprived. That has nothing to do with whether or not you are going to get paid back. That has to do with you making a mistake
2. The way you handle this in the future is that you don’t put yourself in the position where you are going to be sleep deprived and unable to perform. This is nothing to do with the money. This has to do with you.
You didn’t deliver the goods on the interview and who would want to pay for you to have an excursion to stink up the joint. At the end of the day, what you could’ve done is say, “I can’t do Monday. I can do Tuesday. I have plans on Sunday that I cannot change. Tuesday I can be there on an early morning flight.” Do you know what you could have also done? You could go out Monday afternoon for a Tuesday interview, get a good nights sleep in a hotel and then walk in refreshed.
Instead, you made a mistake. People make mistakes and you ask for my advice… I give no BS advice. In the future, don’t put it back to back like this on yourself. You’ve already demonstrated that you can’t deliver under these circumstances; don’t do it again.

Being Smart With Stories | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

EP 863 I speak about using stories effectively when interviewing . . . and it isn’t what you think.

Summary

Today's podcast talks with you about stories. Most of you already know that there will be a lot of questions that you will be asked where you can talk about what you've done and how you went about doing it through stories. In doing so, use a way of talking about the situation you stepped into, the resources that you have available to you, the actions that you took the outcomes that you received in the course of doing this work. You got that.

What often happens is the story because the land particularly well. Whatever the reason is it doesn't work. When you're preparing for your interviews (you do prepare for interviews, right) I always talk with people that tough interview question is that people are asked pretty predictably on interviews. Whether it is, "Tell me about yourself," or, "Where do you see yourself 5 years from now," "What are your career aspirations," "Tell me about a time when you ...." There are a lot of questions that are asked pretty predictably on interviews. If you been on a few interviews you can already see that you're being asked the same questions over and over again.

1. Prepare by rehearsing answers to this.
2. Prepare with stories.
3. Have multiple stories available to illustrate your point.

Why multiple stories?

You see 2 people or 3 people and tell the same story. It lands flat with one person and the others nod. What have you done to counteract the impact of that 1st story? Good or bad? With good, you want to reinforce it. With bad, you want to correct it.

The next person, you need you may ask you similar question, you want to offer up a different story to them and not just parrot back the 1st answer.

2. By selling more than one story, you demonstrate that you have more than one experience with contending with this problem and thus more experience.

I don't care for the most junior person is good be hired an organization or in the C suite. Telling multiple stories to answer question is an effective way of demonstrating your experience and capabilities plus tactically offers a counterbalance against the impact of the story landed flat on someone's ears. All

Final Interview? Here’s a Big Reminder | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

EP 856 There are so many mistakes people make job hunting that are fatal. This reminder is one designed to head off a very painful one.

Summary

If you are on a final interview, and you know you been scheduled for final interview big a corporate recruiter has told you, maybe a third party recruiter has told you, wherever is you found yourself on a final interview, I know from my experience doing search, there is a tendency for people to ease up. They ease up, not just simply with the interviewer, but with the rest of their search, too because they think they've got it in the bag.

The thing I want to remind you about today is that rather than focusing in on this 1 job, I would encourage you to keep going pedal to the metal, really driving hard, even though you are scheduled for all final. You see, what I have found over the years is that sometimes, that dark or situation, that situation out of the blue shows up that's even better, but does become apparent to you but you keep going out on interviews.

I can't tell you the number of times that people I was contacted about a job with tell me, "I've got a final." I would tell them, "Terrific! Take your final interview. I have a client that I think is actually better than this 1." I would go through the reasons why and they'll be absolutely right on the money.

"No, "they would whine. "I think I'm done with job hunting." How costly that was. For some of these people and their careers.

You need to be driving hard all the time. I spoke about the importance of networking and continue to network while you're in a new job because, the fact of the matter is, you don't want to be lurching from one job search to another without a networking place, right? Well, from a job search perspective, you don't want to assume that this final interview is finished, closed, in the bag. You always want to be prepared just in case and because another situation can come in that is even better. Pay you more money! Be a better job! How do you know unless you meet with the firm?

I'm not telling you to take that job. I have no idea what the job is. But I'm telling you that sometimes the final interview doesn't work out because you're competing with someone else. As a result, you feel crushed because you let go of a number of things. You keep interviewing. You if someone is inviting you back for a 2nd or 3rd interview, you go! If you choose to take the one associate with the final, great! It's done!

He you imagine what it's like if you start canceling appointments until the recruiter, "I'm close to something else with another firm, " and then have to go back to them... Or have to start from the very beginning of your search.

My reminder is that you just go out and keep interviewing. Keep networking! Keep on interviewing. Until you have the offer letter, until you've walked in the door, ... Better to be safe than sorry. There is no harm here. If you keep going out on interviews.

Can I Ask About Work-Life Balance? | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

EP 850 I don’t believe you can ask about work-life balance directly.  I do believe you can get the answer your question indirectly.  Here’s how.

The question for today is:

Can I ask about work-life balance?

Before I give you a definitive answer, I'd want to define what an interview is used for.  From an employer's perspective, they are trying to evaluate and assess you in order to figure out whether you can do the job they need to have done.  From their standpoint, well, you know you're not supposed to ask about benefits at the 1st interview, right?  You also know that you want them to like you. 1st, in order to get them to want to move forward, right?

So, when you ask about work-life balance, employers hear that as, "What's the minimum amount of work I need to do in order for you to think that I'm doing my job?"  They are not fond of that thinking and that is how they interpret the question. You can get a better idea of what you want to know by asking a different question.

Let me give you a suggestion.  You know when they get to the part of the interview where they ask, "So, do you have any questions for us?"

I've covered a lot of different questions and different videos. I'm not going to repeat those.Here's the way to asked the question she can get the answer that you want.

"Describe a typical day for me from the time I walk in at what time do you expect me to walk in until the time I leave (tell me what time you expect me to leave).  I want to get a clear idea of what I'm going to be doing by working for you. You have given me a good broad brush stroke I what I would be doing.  Let's get into the weeds a little bit."

You'll get a good idea of what you will be expected to do and, notice, you getting a good idea of your arrival time and departure time, too.  If they expect that you will be working late hours, they'll be telling you that in the course of answering this question.  That, I believe, will help you solve the question of work-life balance.

Look, I don't know of many job hunters, I don't know of many American workers or foreign workers who want to do the least amount of work.  I believe that most people want to have some time for the rest of their lives, too.  They want to have a little bit of time for their family, to have a little bit of fun to do other things in their life, too.

I don't believe that you want to beef finding out about this mythical work-life balance thing.  You want to be finding out about what you're going to be doing and how many hours a day, you're going to be doing, right?
