What Is The Difference Between a Career Coach and a Recruiter? (VIDEO)

I’m surprised that someone doesn’t understand the difference. In my answer, I explained the specifics an offer thumbnail way to recognize where someone’s motivations lie.

Summary

A recruiter is hired by corporations to identify and refer talent to them who need a specific set of qualifications. If the person, in fact, does meet those qualifications and is hired by the corporation, performs well enough during a set period of time that is been pre-agreed to, the recruiter is paid. Thus, a recruiter does not work for a job hunter; they work for the corporate client.

In contrast, a career coach works for a job hunter, because that is who pays them. They help the job hunter in many different ways and has no vested interest in the choice that the job hunter makes because they are not receiving a big payday from the corporation once the search is completed.

Both may help the job hunter improve their interview skills, but the recruiter is only focused on their client and helping the job hunter perform well with THEIR CLIENT. As we know, they will attempt to dissuade you from taking the job with a firm that they don't represent.

In contrast, a career coach is focused on you and helping you perform at a higher level. They want you to find the job but have no vested interest in which job you take. If the role, a recruiters only paid if you take a job with your client (please note that I am judging that you are junior enough to not make the grade for, a retained search firm. A retained search firm is compensated differently).

In conclusion, to understand where loyalty lies in professions, notice who was paying the bulk of the money. Recruiters are paid by corporations to find people who work for that firm for pre-agreed to period of time. That company then pays the recruiter a sizable amount of money.

A career coach doesn't care which firm you join because you are paying them. Thus, the loyalty is to help you perform at a higher level in order to get the result that you want

The Difference Between How You Deal With Recruiters and What C Level Pros Do


There is a very clear difference between how C level professionals deal with recruiters and how non-C suite professionals and non-professionals do. What are you doing wrong?

Summary

I was coaching someone this morning and it reminded me of something where I want to talk with you who are not executives, who are not in the C suite, in terms of how you deal with recruiters.

What I coach C level professionals, one thing is incredibly obvious. They treat every interview with the recruiter as though are an interview with the client. They prepare for it. They want to understand the job. They start researching their own background and how it meshes with where they have connections that can play into the organization that the search firm is doing the search for. They treated very seriously.

For most people, they don't work at that way. They view it as a nuisance and an inconvenience. Often, the the messages given, "They are wasting my time," or "They are getting in the way." They send all sorts of messages that in for nuisance an inconvenience. Sometimes, the contingency recruiters not seen as being as professional as the executive search firm. Sometimes, that is absolutely true. AND half and you don't know that going into the conversation; all you know is that you got a phone call or an email or an inMail talking about a particular search, maybe they are asking for help, and suddenly this is PAIN. Suddenly, you are whining and complaining vs. a C suite person who will offer a referral , make a suggestion to the search firm and prepare for the interview.

They get results and you get aggravation. They become successful the search was far more often than you do. What's the message in that?

Again, sometimes contingency recruiters are not competent. Sometimes, executive recruiters an optically competent either. You are times that executive search firms that in the contingency area AND it makes no difference.

One thing I want to leap in with is that sometimes those contingency firms are approached with racism.

"Some Indian firm called."

"Some Indian guy called."

Excuse me? I want to stop eating the tracks on that one. The fact that they have a particular national origin or from a particular nation and hired by a US firm to do recruiting for them? STOP IT. STOP IT!

Take a bias outside because you wind up being no different than any other bigot and cutting yourself off at the knees, even if they are a very junior individual and from a nation other than yours, no matter where in the world they are, does not make them incompetent, rude, or worse.

Slow down and work on creating a great impression. It is what executives and people in the C suite do.

Why Do Recruiters Ask You About Things They Can Find Out in Your Resume | No BS Job Search Advice Radio


There are 2 reasons why recruiters ask questions about things that they can already find out in your resume. Here, I lay them out simply for you.

Summary

The question I received was, "Why do recruiters ask about things they can already find out in my resume?"

This may be a shock to you and if it is, I apologize to you for sharking you.However, I always have to answer with "no BS." for why they do this.

The 1st reason is that people lie.They don't tell the truth. Thus, when you put them on the spot during an interview,, sometimes they give you information than what's on the resume.

Assuming that you are a "truth teller," and your 1st reaction was to groan about people lying, another thing that we are trying to do (Although I don't do recruiting anymore, I did for more than 40 years and have a good idea of the my thought process when I was doing this),I wanted to see if I want to hear how you tell the story Of what you did and how you went about doing it So that I would get a sense of how you interviewed.

For me, if I stumbled into someone who is trying to con me, that was a "bonus point."I am assuming that everyone is telling me the truth in the resume.In telling me the truth in the resume I'm moving onto the next thing, which is if I'm going to invest my time and energy in representing someone, how are they going to perform on an interview? Do I have a chance of earning a fee? If not, (buzzer sound) I delete the resume because it is a waste of my time, no matter how good you think you are. My client won't wind up hiring you. Do you understand?

We don't do things to "find you a job." You are paying nothing. What recruiters do is fill a position with a client and the client pays us.As a result, you are the person who will allow us to earn the fee… Or not and we are trying to figure that out.

In telling us what you've done and how you went about doing it, You are helping us to discern between different people because we can't submit everyone. We are not paid to submit resumes as though they are a burger at a fast food restaurant.What recruiters are paid to do is to deliver someone who the client has determined that they need because the person has a particular background and a particular personality type who will do the job and has particular skills that they have specified.

If you cannot interview well, if you can't interview well with the recruiter, (buzzer sound) they will hit the delete key because they have no chance of hurting a fee.

So take it seriously. Don't just simply question why they're asking you these questions and wasting your time because they aren't. You are wasting their time if you don't deliver wellAnd demonstrate that you have the required skills that their client is looking for.

How Can I Tell a Recruiter “No” When They Ask for References? (VIDEO)


Here answer the question from someone who is asked for references by recruiter during the 1st interview and doesn’t want to provide them.

Summary

I was asked the question I thought was great, "A recruiter has asked me for references at the time of the 1st interview. I don't really want to give it to them. How can I say no to a recruiter if they asked me for references during an interview?"

I want to start off by differentiating and start by answering the question about a contingency recruiters. That's definitely a place to say no. They may tell you that they want to check references on behalf of their clients. That's a great line. But what they are really doing is trying to use your contacts to recruit other people. I know this because I listen to sales trainers for years talk about this is a great gambit to get talent and you don't want to be complicit.

The easiest way to respond is to smile and say, "In due time but not right now."

If you respond by saying, "We need to have it because the client wants us to check references at the time that we submit a cabinet," (I want to be clear, not talking about retained search firm's or C suite professionals) I am answering in this way for the Average Jane or Joe who is approached by a recruiter and is being told that the client wants it.

"Great! I'll be happy to provide my references to the client."

"They want us to check the references."

"Not at this time."

"Then we can submit you."

"OK."

Leave it at that. You know why? It's because if they can get you in the door they'll get you in the door.

And they can't. What they're trying to do is parlay one contact into 2 or 3 were they call them up and trying to recruit them, extensively under the guise of checking a reference.

So, they might say, "We need a former manager, it was start by contacting your manager in doing a reference check and then flip it in an effort to get recruiting business from them.

Or they may try to talk to a peer reviewers and then say, "Say! This is a position I am trying to recruit for. Is this something that might interest you? There are a lot of little gambits that go on with third-party recruiters.

I know there are a lot of people who might respond by saying, "Would you do that with a company?"

"NO!" Unfortunately, too many third-party recruiters or sleazy. We know this already. The idea is to push them off because you don't know if you can trust them yet (wink wink. Probably you can trust many of them anyway. There are exceptions, but most of them you probably can't.) And it's kind of like being on a 1st date with someone.

"Can I get a reference from your former husband or wife, please. I would like to get a reference from them. Maybe someone else you went out with previously because I want to know what you are liked by talking to them."

No, not on a 1st date, especially with an absolute stranger. Obviously, you would never do that in a dating situation! Here, I want you to do this very casually and with a big smile on your face, say, "In due time , we'll get that."

"But the client wants it!"

"If you can't present me with out that, obviously you don't think I am a fit. So let's leave it at that and just move on."
