Hedge Fund Brainteasers: The Boat and The Ladder | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

EP 864 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter poses a situation to you and asks you for your answer to this brainteaser.

Summary

Let's do another 1 of those fun and tough interview questions. Here's the scenario: there is a boat at sea. It has a 10 foot ladder off the side and the rope ladder is 1 foot underwater. It starts raining incredibly hard, sufficiently hard that there is about 2 feet of rain every hour. How will it take for the latter to be covered in water halfway?

Ready for your answer?

It won't.

Let me put it simply. The boat is gonna rise, too . With that amount of water. It's only going to be 1 foot underwater.

The Second Easiest Way to Negotiate a Higher Salary | Job Search Radio

You may have heard my show last week about the easiest way to negotiate a higher salary. This is the second easiest.

Summary

Let's assume that you tried my easiest way to negotiate a higher salary for yourself and they said no. At that point, you reveal the fact (just do a quick review, easiest way to negotiate a higher salary is to start by saying, "Wow! That's a pretty good offer. I'd like to think about it a little bit." In their mind, they start getting nervous. You then try to get them to do "a touch better." There's a detailed presentation, if you watch the video.)

The 2nd easiest way is responding to their rejection of the easiest way, if you do, this is when you reveal that you have another offer. If you don't, and you're planning on turning this down anyway, you can still talk about having another offer because you have nothing to lose. If you have nothing, it's up to you as to whether or not you want to bluff

If this isn't good enough for you, bluffing incurs no loss. Bluffing, if you were to take the offer, can't risk them saying, "okay, take the other offer." And you grasping to get the offer back. And they go away and you look like a fool .

The 2nd easiest way is revealing that you have another job offer, it is for X number of dollars, you prefer their job to that one. "Why do you do that? Can't you be flexible?" The other one is a good job with a good firm, too . But, at the end of the day, when I go to the bank, they want me to have enough money to live on. They don't want me going into debt. The result ones of being. I do have to take money into consideration in their offer is. About $7500 more than yours.. Could you at least match that one?"

Often there to make it seem like a big deal and will be so hard that the earth will need to apart and working you need to get a lot of OKs from different people. "That's okay, because the other firm wants a decision by…" You tell them a date 2 days out. "They have been waiting patiently. They understand I have an interest in this job but they are starting to put pressure on me and I have stalled them for 2 more days. When you believe you can get back to me? Because if I don't have a decision in 2 more days I am to take the other offer."

What that does is turn everything around so it's no longer on you and it's on them. If they match that number or match the number you told him you will accept, whatever it is, you take the job.

So the text 2nd best way is to reveal that you have another job offer at just the right moment.

They Are Watching You | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

EP 862 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter reminds you of all the people that are evaluating you when you interview for a job.

Summary

Today, let's talk about 1 of the most underappreciated, under reminded about tips I can give you about job hunting.  There was a song many years ago with the refrain, "I'll be watching you."  On an interview, it is not just the interviewer who is watching you.  Every person that you meet, even for a moment, is taking note of you and having an impression of you.

That can be the security guard in the visit in the building that you will be visiting.  That can be the receptionist on the floor that is buzzing you in.  Very truly and confidently speaking to her with a smile on your face, "Hi! My name is so-and-so.  I have a 2:30 appointment to meet such and such person."

"Great. But you have a seat."

"Terrific. Happy to do it."

Then, sit facing the greatest number of entry points to the room so that you can see someone approaching you.

With the interviewer, as well, who may take you around the floor. Later, or introduce you to other people.

The tower seriously doesn't serve you.  What will serve you, at least in the United States, is a friendly, affable smile, a great handshake, a confident demeanor about you – – these go a long way toward letting people like you.

People get hired for a number of reasons.  Hopefully, 1 of them is that you are  competent enough to do the job.  Then, there are the tiebreakers.  Among the tiebreakers are:

Do I think I can work with this person?

Do I like this person?  Often, this is the 1st question the hiring manager may ask subordinates.  Do you like them? What do you like about them?  Things along these lines can be the tiebreaker between you and another person.

Again, remember, everyone is watching you.  Everyone is noticing you.  Everyone is commenting about you if they meet you.
