Stupid Interview Mistakes: What Was The Question, Again?

People make so many stupid interview mistakes. Here’s another one.

Summary

I'm back today with another 1 of those stupid interview mistakes that people make. The title of the show is, "What was the question again?" It's really the notion of going off topic. And just basking in your own magnificence, talking until you're putting everyone to sleep by making them think about lunch or dinner or how the hell he get the heck out of his interview. It happens more often than you think.

I remember on one occasion I was interviewing someone for client. I'm a very easy interviewer; I just want to know what the truth is. It's really that simple. Tell me your story; help me understand; I would ask good questions. It wasn't complicated. In this person start to go on and on and on in such minute detail about nothing that relates to the question. There was a point where I said, "Hey! I have to ask you a question."

"Sure."

"Do you remember my original question?" He didn't. It let me know that he'd been on so many interviews that he stop listening to the question and just start to answer what he thought the question was, instead of listening to it.

You seek folks people are asking questions for a reason. They want to know something specific about how you match job, both from the standpoint of skills and experiences to getting a sense of personality. Do you make them feel confident in you that you can do the job. When you go off on these wild tangents that have nothing to do with anything that has been set up until that point, heck, they just go bonkers. I go bonkers! You're putting me to sleep and all I want to do is in the conversation.

Just be self-aware. Focus in on the question. Give your answer in 45 to 75 seconds. It's really that simple and you will make this mistake.

EP 812 There are 2 reasons why recruiters ask questions about things that they can already find out in your resume.  Here, I lay them out simply for you.

Summary

The question I received was, "Why do recruiters ask about things they can already find out in my resume?"

This may be a shock to you and if it is, I apologize to you for sharking you.However, I always have to answer with "no BS." for why they do this.

The 1st reason is that people lie.They don't tell the truth. Thus, when you put them on the spot during an interview,, sometimes they give you information than what's on the resume.

Assuming that you are a "truth teller," and your 1st reaction was to groan about people lying, another thing that we are trying to do (Although I don't do recruiting anymore, I did for more than 40 years and have a good idea of the my thought process when I was doing this),I wanted to see if I want to hear how you tell the story Of what you did and how you went about doing it So that I would get a sense of how you interviewed.

For me, if I stumbled into someone who is trying to con me, that was a "bonus point."I am assuming that everyone is telling me the truth in the resume.In telling me the truth in the resume I'm moving onto the next thing, which is if I'm going to invest my time and energy in representing someone, how are they going to perform on an interview? Do I have a chance of earning a fee? If not, (buzzer sound) I delete the resume because it is a waste of my time, no matter how good you think you are. My client won't wind up hiring you. Do you understand?

We don't do things to "find you a job." You are paying nothing. What recruiters do is fill a position with a client and the client pays us.As a result, you are the person who will allow us to earn the fee… Or not and we are trying to figure that out.

In telling us what you've done and how you went about doing it, You are helping us to discern between different people because we can't submit everyone. We are not paid to submit resumes as though they are a burger at a fast food restaurant.What recruiters are paid to do is to deliver someone who the client has determined that they need because the person has a particular background and a particular personality type who will do the job and has particular skills that they have specified.

If you cannot interview well, if you can't interview well with the recruiter, (buzzer sound) they will hit the delete key because they have no chance of hurting a fee.

So take it seriously. Don't just simply question why they're asking you these questions and wasting your time because they aren't. You are wasting their time if you don't deliver well and demonstrate that you have the required skills that their client is looking for.

Ask The Big Game Hunter: The Middle Manager with Rusty Technical Skills

What are the best strategies for a laid-off middle-manager to get a job if they have a technical background which has gone rusty?

Summary

The question is really very simple. "What are the best strategies for a laid-off middle manager to get a job if they have a technical background which has gone rusty?"

This a little bit that's unclear about the question, but on their work with one definition of it. The definition, I'm going to work with this 1 that says, "I work in IT, I'm not really technical any longer, I'm not in the Bay area them somewhere the United States. My skills are rusty from a technical standpoint. 1 of the best things I can do?"

The technology standpoint, it's not like to be asked to be a programmer so you want to update your technical skills up to a point. However, if your goal is to become a coder and earn less money than what you do is manager, then, by all means, deep dive in there can be extraordinarily technical. Take classes, work hard and being a technologist and that will be the kind of salary that you earn.

Another approach is to go whole hog into the management side and lightly update your technical skills to make sure that they are not so obsolete so that if you are ask questions from technology standpoint you are going to be blown out of the water.

Ultimately, I want to be clear, the question for you is what you want to be doing? What kind of role do you want to be in? If the role is to be a technologist, you have to get your skills up to date. If the role is to manage technologists, you want to make sure that their current and sufficient enough so that if your staff has an issue you can help them but not so deep that you are want of coding aggressively.

Environments the code aggressively, they tend to be smaller, generally more poorly funded (there are exceptions to that), but if you're living most of America, they are not really essential.

At the end of the day, you will be better off diving and harder into technology project and program management and getting those certifications, rather than getting a C# certification. You're better of demonstrating management attributes and that you manage technologists and that you deliver projects on time and within budget and Formalize training that in going in the other direction.

Today, I want to let you in on the secret, when the things I picked up over my many years of doing recruiting that indicates the firm is interested in hiring you.

I'm not talking about after the interview with equally open say, "I think you're great." I'm talking about life. Real time. In the room. While you are meeting with the firm. The signal that the giving of particular interest.

I want to be clear that this doesn't work all the time. Nothing works overtime job hunting. If it happens, you'll know that they're interested.

This is the signal that the firm's is give in the interview room... The more they talk, the more they like you.

What's happening is that they've shifted from evaluating and assessing you to selling you. The trying to persuade you OR they happen to feel particular connection with you. In both cases, that's particular hiring manager likes you and is willing to "bless the hire." Or they are willing to go further in getting to know you..

Nothing is ever guaranteed because most of these interview scenarios, there was always someone else who can make it difficult for you. At least this person who do sitting with eyes like you and wants to bring you on board.

Again, you may be meeting 3 or 4 people. This is only one. Unless they the hiring manager or the overall hiring manager, it may not need anything and sometimes with these hiring managers if the subordinates don't like you. It will work.

However, if the hiring manager likes you, of all the individuals you meeting with at a certain point in the interview start to tell you how wonderful the firm is and how much they like working there, if they start talking on a they start shifting gears into what nd on about themselves (I'm not talking about the 1st 5 minutes. That's just a bad interviewer. I'm talking about after you spend some time with them talking with them about your experience and competence as well as what you've done, as well as all the other things that their asking you about), if they start shifting gears into them talking all the time, that is a buy signal. That means that you've done well.
