Stupid Interview Mistakes: Having Disorganized Answers (VIDEO)

It is very easy to avoid this interview mistake. Just use STAR.

Summary

I thought I would do what my "stupid interview mistakes"shows today and talk with you about 1 of the classic mistakes people make when they are answering questions during an interview. Often, it is because they are sufficiently nervous that they become disorganized.

There are 2 things I want to encourage people to do. The 1st is to remember some sort of anchoring device that brings you back home. As I was doing with someone yesterday, in their case, I suggested that if they had a ring, when they needed to get centered to just press on that spot on your finger as a reminder, whether they wore the ring or not.

Another thing that is more concrete for a lot of folks is organize your answer using a particular acronym called STAR. That stands for SITUATION that you stepped into, the TASK you are asked to perform or were assigned or chose to do, the ACTION that you performed, and the RESULTS that you obtained. In referencing results, you want to use financial terms that reflect the money that your work helped your firm make or save. If your work helped your firm generate a certain amount of money, you indicate the number of dollars or the percentage difference between you and another person in your firm doing similar work. You can stated in terms of pure dollars or in percentages. It makes no difference.

The STAR approach to answering questions engages people because you are telling a story and people love stories! The format, again, is SITUATION, TASK, ACTION and RESULTS

EP 43​5 I discuss the importance of understanding what your target is when you are job hunting.

Summary

If you are driving from New York to Boston or maybe Paris to Rome or Brasília to Caracas and you didn't have a GPS or roadmap, how would you get there are how would you even know you are driving in the right direction? The same is true in your career, isn't it? How do you get from junior staff to a director position? How do you from manager to C suite? How to go about doing it?

Most people have magical thinking and believe that if they wish it and hope it and do a good job, that will be their eventual destination. You can also do with smart people do and start interviewing people who have already gotten to where you want to get to that how they got there. This is a form of informational interview where, basically, you meet with someone, not to ask for job, but to ask for information and advice. Some people make the mistake of meeting with one person and believing that they have all the information that they need to know in order to get to their goals. You know, 1 Person Has Their Particular Way. But, instead, I want you to meet with multiple people and look for common threads to their stories and unusual suggestions.

For example, if I people tell you that you need a Masters degree or particular training and one person says that you can get by with an Associates degree, which opinion do you think you should discard? Seriously? The probability is it is going to be the Associates, right? What you have that information, once you've had your questions answered, act on the information. That's the most important thing that people don't do. Don't treat the revised like just another weight loss book or another self-help book to be read and ignored. Act on the advice that you receive.

When I attended school in New York to become a psychotherapist, I remember the teacher at the Institute say that is important to charge a good fee for therapy services. His reasoning was that by paying a good fee, you could afford to be there to help them to receive treatment and continue to help them.

He also said that is important for people to pay because, at the end of the day, the patient is more willing to act on the advice, the insights that they receive in the session. Simply put, free advice is often ignored. Advice that people paper for is likely to get them to take action. That's going to be true of you, too. It's 1 of the reasons that I do coaching is in order to help people take action and do it in a way that my unique skill set (and I do have a very unique skill set, having done recruiting) will go a long way toward helping them break through.

By treating the advice that you receive is being valuable because you paid for it, and telling the person or people they gave it to you what you are doing with their advice, it helps them feel as though you have value their opinion and that they did not just wasting time by speaking with you. A lot of people do that because they get free advice. They don't act on.

So, I'll simply say, if you meet with someone stay in touch with them. Hire a coach because coaching will be something that you will pay for in the good coach will help you move faster than just a friend give you the advice.

Building Charisma | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

EP 900 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses the importance of charisma when you interview and explains how you can increase yours.

Summary

I want to talk with you today about building charisma.  If you know some of my work, you know that I believe that there are certain number of qualities that firms look for when they hire. Competence is one.  Self-confidence, character, chemistry, CHARISMA… All of which add up for me as personal leadership. How do you add to your charisma? Why is charisma important? Often, it is a huge differentiator between one candidate and another, and it draws people in, emotionally when you interview.

Today, I want to help you work on your charisma By building some of the techniques that will allow you to be more charismatic in interviews.

The 1st thing is preparation.  An unprepared person who is "winging it," has a degree of uncertainty about them.  You cannot be uncertain when you interview.  You have to display complete mastery of the subject on an interview.  So, you have to take the time to prepare.  After all, athletes do it.  The greats do it.  Do you think A public speaker hasn't walked out and rehearsed that speech before they have given it? Why do you believe that you can just "wing it" and do well on every interview that you do? Even if you are not hired, you want to create positive impressions because you never know when you will run into these folks again.

Preparation is a huge part of presenting yourself in a charismatic way.  Another thing is asking great questions.  If you just arrived with little more than superficial questions, you are not going to draw them into you.  One of my beliefs, and I've said this in another video I've done, is that the more they talk, the more they like you. You want to get them talking as much as possible Because of their belief becomes that you are interested.  While they are talking, you want to appear completely engaged in what you are listening to.

You'll find this next one comes hand-in-hand with energy.  Energetic people present themselves in charismatic ways and people who use their hands when they talk also appear charismatic.  In using your hands to speak, I want to be clear that you never block your face.  You go to about middle-of-the-chin level when you use your hands because anything that you do to block your face becomes distracting. But keeping it to about middle of the chin level, no higher, emphasizes points and, thus, demonstrate greater strength and passion for what you do.

That brings us to passion.  I know it's easier to be passionate about things that you love, whether it's hobbies or family that you have huge joy about.  However, you have to demonstrate about your career, too.  Being passionate as you talk about your work is incredibly important.

Finally, optimism.  People are not drawn to, people are not magnetic, if they send down and pessimistic.  If you talk to downers, don't you just want to get away from them?  Downers – – people who are completely negative, point fingers at others, complain, piss and moan (Excuse my language, folks)… You want to be someone who draws people into you, who has a magnetic quality… That's what charisma is all about.  That backdated quality that makes you attractive to others.

Employing some of these techniques is a huge way of making people want to hire you because they want to be around you.  Being flat, being dull, speaking in a monotone for 30 minutes just makes people want to go to sleep.  Is that what you want to do?  Of course, not.  You want to be that charismatic individual that, even if they turn down, it's hard for them to turn you down because they really like you.
