What Can Replace LinkedIn? (VIDEO)


I want to answer someone’s question about what can replace LinkedIn as a tool for the job hunters. I also addressed this from the standpoint of small business owners and solopreneurs.

Summary

Someone asked me a question I thought would be useful one for people to hear the answer to because I think it is such a remarkably underutilized resource for people, whether you are in, job hunting mode, you are a business owner… Whatever it is, people need to start thinking a little bit differently.

The question I received from someone is, "What can replace LinkedIn?" People of gotten to the point where they think of LinkedIn as a stilted platform that doesn't feel comfortable and, although it remains the best platform for job hunters, for business owners, it's a little bit different and not as ideal as the alternative is.

What can be an alternative to LinkedIn whether you're a job hunter or a business owner, you are a solopreneur . . . Whoever you are? What can help in the business world differently than LinkedIn?

I think the real alternative to people despite the attitude that some have is Facebook. Facebook does a lot of things extremely well. I'm not the look at from a marketers perspective; I will look at from a user's perspective. From a job hunter perspective, you have the opportunity connect with people on Facebook that you find, perhaps on LinkedIn, perhaps you read about them, perhaps you meet a conference and start building a personal relationship and a business relationship, too.

Historically, Facebook was for your personal life and LinkedIn was for your professional life . However, I think the perceived limitations is now "self-perceived all self-perceived at this point and Facebook is trying to make inroads into the professional world in many different ways.

For example, they know me job postings available for people so if you're trying to fill a job, you can now posted on Facebook for free. More of you should be looking for those jobs on Facebook and applying to hiring managers or firms through Facebook rather than purely through LinkedIn.

Groups on LinkedIn are not great anymore.They have died the death that Yahoo and Google groups have died. They are just less effective in so many different ways.On Facebook, they are vital. There is a life to them that is very different. Facebook has encouraged this summary different ways.

I want to encourage you to start looking at Facebook as an alternative and start looking at Facebook as an alternative for building relationships with people who, right now, you don't necessarily know. Start building relationships with people you know, somewhat, but don't necessarily know well. Start cultivating the personal and begin extending it into the business.

For business owners, you already know that. Facebook allows you do a lot of different things to target users. I think in terms of the relationship. For example,If you are a solopreneur, there are groups that you can join on Facebook that will allow you to start networking With other business people in your area So that you can start giving and receiving referrals.

Why not do that? Why not start thinking of Facebook like an online Chamber of Commerce for you? If you are a solopreneur or a small business owner, you want to connect with others. If you think of Facebook is the place where you are constantly screaming, "Use my services,"You are going to blow it.No one wants to hear you say, "Hire me!"That's certainly true of job hunters.

Facebook is a relationship place. It's a place where you can cultivate relationships pretty easily so that people want to hear your views (that's certainly true service professionals) and they want to hire you.

There Is Now Reason to Pay Attention to Facebook Professionally (VIDEO)


There is no reason to expand your network of relationships on Facebook beyond your friends.

 

Summary

I wanted to do a video today about the public rollout of a new feature on Facebook; that is, the ability to post jobs.

Let's say your hiring manager and not a job hunter. You are trying to bring on talent. Obviously, the ability to post jobs is a nice benefit but now here's the real thing about it – – it now encourages you, whether you're a job hunter/employee of an organization and completely happy doing what you are doing, your hiring manager and trying to bring on talent, what Facebook is encouraging you to do with this 1 simple action is brought in your network of relationships on Facebook beyond your friends.

Why do I say that? Let's look holistically at Facebook and what might happen in the future. If you start with job ads, what you now have to do is look at Facebook as a potential tool for business. Yes, there have always been business pages and fan pages and things like that. Now look at it from the standpoint of hiring and bringing on talent and now your Facebook profile has to be even more careful.

You want to broaden your network on Facebook to influencers on Facebook and not just restrict yourself to your immediate circle of friends. The way business works these days is that is not just simply who you know, but who your friends know who they can introduce you to. Thus widening your circle becomes more important.

I wouldn't be surprised at the descriptive areas for a person's background broadens over the next few years to include professional successes and information. Yes, you've always been able to search on Facebook for people, their firms and things along those lines, but as always feel very limiting because of how few people participate in sharing that kind of information.

Let's say you're a corporate recruiter. You now want to build your network as wide as possible beyond LinkedIn. LinkedIn obviously makes it paid, but now you can advertise for free for people that is now delivered in their feed and suddenly your marketing is grown exponentially.

You now want to build your network of relationships on Facebook as well as on LinkedIn in order to broaden your contacts. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next few years, Facebook takes on the 2 ton professional gorilla, LinkedIn, all from this very simple thing of free job posting.

This is your time before the next recession to broaden your network of contacts, whether you are an employee of a firm or a potential employer or hiring manager or HR professional. That is because, as you've heard many times, your network is your net worth. Facebook is making it easier for you to use it as an employment vehicle. You want to be out there proactively building your Facebook network as you have your LinkedIn network.

A Creative Way to Use Facebook for Job Hunting

This is a creative tip and I say it’s a creative tip because it is an underutilized one. I know with Google, you are used to seeing advertising around the page and I’m sure you’ve noticed that Facebook does the same thing.

Facebook is remarkably inexpensive and terrific way to promote yourself. For you people in a creative field, why not do a campaign on Facebook. It’s very inexpensive; you can choose the demographics of who the ad is displayed to. You can run campaigns for a few dollars per day and put your impressions in front of people, perhaps link it back to a website or page on Facebook where you can promote yourself and your capabilities.

Creative ideas like this for creative professionals go a long way toward helping you stand out from your competition. Don’t just go for the conventional route. Look for ways that you can reach out to individuals who might be a position to go, “how. That’s a great idea!” Click through to you and then be interested in meeting with you.

Opening Your Facebook Privacy Settings

Summary

Let’s talk about Facebook privacy settings for a moment. No, I’m not going to be scolding you to set your privacy settings so that you can’t be found. In fact, I want you to set your privacy settings so you can be found.

Why? Because LinkedIn is only one tool that recruiters and employers are using to find talent for their clients, to network with people, to do their job.

My philosophy is that the person who gets ahead isn’t always the smartest work the hardest although those are great qualities to have. The person who gets ahead tends to be the one who remains alert to opportunity; sometimes those are internal to organization; most of the time the external.

If there are things that you are doing on Facebook that are drawing positive attention by employers or recruiters or others, why not make it easy for them to find you and talk with you about it?

One of the things that you should do is make it clear from you work. But your job title in. Make it obvious what profession you’re involved with. You don’t need to do it to the same degree you might on LinkedIn.

However, Facebook’s search can be used by recruiters and others for networking and hiring.

You may say to yourself today, “I don’t want to be annoyed by these people.” That’s your prerogative. Yet what I want to remind you of is that what they are trying to do is to reach out to you about an opportunity that they perceive may be superior to what you currently have. It may pay you more, and get you closer to home, improve your quality of life, give you access to training and skills you don’t have etc.. What’s the problem? You’re going to field a question through Messenger? This is such a big problem?

And if you say no to it, what did it cost you? A minute or a minute and a half of your time? What’s the big whoop?

Open up your privacy settings. Let recruiters be able to find you even if you are not actively looking for a job. Make sure your employer is listed because they are brand may help you. Make it easy for people to locate you.
