Why Won’t a Recruiter Tell Me Who Their Client Is? | Job Search Radio

They want to meet with me to discuss the job and won’t tell me who their client is.

On this show, I discuss 3 reasons why recruiters won’t tell you the client this.

recruiter-sticking-tongue-out

[spp-transcript]

Here’s a question I received:

“What does it mean when a recruiter won’t tell me the name of the company that they are representing?”

“They want to meet with me 1st before talking in detail about the job.”

I’m not going to talk about ethics here because, even though you may think it is unethical, it is actually a non-issue.  Here are the issues from a recruiters perspective:

1.  You may attempt to circumvent them before you have a chance to talk with them about the job.  By circumventing, you take the information you’ve been given and apply directly to the firm. They are out $20,000, $25,000 $30,000 $50,000, $75,000 $100,000 in fees, all because, frankly, there are some people out there (I’m not saying you) who are swine.  Who are awful contemptible people, you think it is smart to steal things from others and cheat them out of what they rightly deserve.

2.  Another issue is control.  The desire to meet with you is indicative of control.  They want to control the situation. They are between you and your client.  They want to see you 1st and assess you 1st before revealing anything further.  That is 1/2 step down from. “I won’t tell you anything because I’m afraid you will steal it from me.”  They want to meet with you and discuss it in person. After they have a chance to evaluate you.

3.  Another thing is, what’s in it for them?  Perhaps their client has a brand that is not a positive and they can speak with you in person excite you about the job and then reveal it is this firm that has a pretty bad reputation in the market area, but has a unique opportunity.

Those are a few reasons why recruiters do it.  There are many more but these are going to be the top 3 reasons why recruiters don’t reveal things.

Job Search Lessons from Game 7 of the 2016 World Series

The World Series ended in spectacular fashion with a Game 7 between two teams representing franchises with lengthy absences from being World Champions. A game that started with the Cubs up early and tied with a home run against Cubs closer Aroldis Chapman, a game delayed by rain and won in extra innings made for a thrilling and heartbreaking night for the two teams and two cities.

I want to focus on two different lessons from the game and how they relate to job search and business, in general.

After the game, Cubs pitcher Jon Lester was asked about “the curse” the Cubs lived under for 108 years until their win.

Should You Follow LinkedIn Recommendations for Getting More Profile Views? | Job Search Radio

LinkedIn often tells you to take certain actions to get more profile views. Should you and why? That’s what I answer on today’s show.

[spp-transcript]

LinkedIn 0ften sends out messages that say things like, “Getting more profile views will help you get found for the right opportunity.  Fill in the type of professional you are. You’ll get more views by taking some of the steps below.” They include adding a particular skill in your profile, adding a summary, connecting with a particular person or following a particular company.

Should you follow the strategy even if it seems stupid?

The fact of the matter is you will get more profile views if more people notice you. In their recommendation of following a particular person, often that’s a gateway because this person is being followed by a lot of people themselves. Thus it opens up your network much more broadly.

They’re right when they say that having a summary improves your rankings. Especially if you’re job hunting, people with summaries — put in your phone number and email address in there (minimally an email address while you’re job hunting that forwards to your real address) goes a long way toward improving your contacts.

Adding a skill or following a company  or persona will also help.

“But I don’t know this person!”

As someone responded to someone who was complaining, connecting with people who are not relevant to your business is a good idea because the number of connections affects the number of people including those who are relevant to your business will see your full profile. How many you will see is also affected by searching from your account, too.

Follow the LinkedIn recommendations and make connections. Follow those firms and fields because at the end of the day, you will come up in rankings higher, be connected with more people (that person who was recommended had tons of contacts) and that builds up your connections, too
