Mojo. Swagger. Attitude. Whatever You Call It, Show It!

Whether you call it mojo, swagger, or attitude, make sure you show it on your next interview.

This is a show about Mojo… Swagger… Attitude… Whatever you want to call it.. Whether you are a leader, executive or a staff person, firms buy into it. Often when you’re out looking for work, and on your turf and don’t feel completely confident, you feel like you want to feel about the other person… Mistake.

What you need to do is deal with the other person as you presuppose them today. After all, 95 times out of 100 when you meet people in the social situation your instincts about them right. Don’t waste time feeling out of the people; just go right into trusting your instincts about the other person.

As you walk into the interview, shake hands assertively with someone. I’m not talking about one of those ridiculous handshakes that almost seem like someone is pumping water from a well.

I’m talking about a firm confident handshake. An assertive manner about yourself (Being assertive is not rude or obnoxious. It’s just confident, certain and decisive).

We think about certain actors or actresses and how they carry themselves in front of the , a have “IT.” You want to have “IT” and show it. You want to have that great handshake, a great smile in your face, as you talk you don’t want to seem concerned or worried or like you are wondering. What you want to be doing is speaking confidently and with certainty about the subject.

At the end of the day if they choose someone else, it makes no difference because someone is going to hire you. You have to conduct yourself with that belief. Someone is going to hire you. It’s just a question the right firm finding you and you demonstrating your skills in a way that makes sense to them.

You Certify Yourself

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses how we certify ourselves during a job interview as the person to be chosen.

I’ve been part of a nonprofit group that runs men’s retreats around the world. In the course of standing for what is called certification (basically, being authorized by a committee of men who are leading these weekends to have the authority to lead weekends), I’ve been told that the basic idea that you try to have is you certified yourself.

Your matter and your demeanor go along way toward whether or not you will ever be chosen to be hired for an organization. That is true whether I was going for certification of that organization to leave these retreats. That’s true when you are being interviewed for a position.

Does that mean you have to carry yourself as a firm determined individual? No. It’s really about your self-confidence and your certainty in yourself, no matter what your personality is and how it displays itself in the course of the interview.

You have to be an interview clone and parade in like so many other people do with the behavior that’s false or having false arrogance. You just have to that presence and bearing that says, “I’m comfortable in my skin. I know what I know.” You need to be able to look people square in the eye, at times you’re going to smile, at times you may even laugh, a time she may display some discomfort or agony about decisions you’ve made, but you’re comfortable in your own skin as you speak about your experience, your competence and all matters.

When you can do that, it doesn’t really matter if someone chooses you are not. They’ll choose you but when you can certify yourself, when you carry yourself with believing yourself that you are the authority, then, ultimately, you will do so much better on your interviews, do so much better professionally… I want to encourage you – – relax.

You don’t have to act any particular way. You just have to really be yourself and be comfortable in your own skin.

The Best Ways to Get An Interview

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses the most and least effective ways to get a job interview


Today, we talk about the best ways to get an interview. Let me give you a context.

If you want to be referred to a product or service, you’ve done some research and you’re ready to make some choices, often, what do you do?

I’m not talking about flipping a coin, of course. You talk to friends, colleagues, business associates… People that you know and trust and rely upon. Then you make a decision.

In interviewing, you can do much the same thing. Let’s say you’re about a job opening. What can you do? Friends, colleagues and associates who you might know who can provide you with an introduction to the hiring manager.

Let’s work with the assumption that not everyone that you know is going to know something about the firm you are interested in. Why not just go to LinkedIn? Why not see if there is someone you can connect with who can provide you with an introduction? After all, many of these people get employee referral bonuses for recommending someone to their firm was hired.

Then I can simply do you was silent because you asked him for it. Yet the demonstrate that you have experience, knowledge, and skills that are suitable but let’s assume that you do. Do you think it’s better to go into the great abyss of the applicant tracking system or be referred by someone who already works there or contact the hiring manager yourself?

The second and third choice are clearly best in the likelihood of you getting through directly to the hiring manager but it’s hard and you have much greater chance of getting through if you are referred by someone who already works there.
