  1. Thanks for posting this video. This is the first time I am negotiating and your tips made me feel a lot better, whether the company and I can come to a mutual agreement or not.

  3. Hi Jeff, I hope you can help me…I got a job offer recently but they’re obviously low balling me for whatever reason, and they asked me in the offer letter I got via email to reply to the offer via email. My question to you is: Should I send my counter-offer via email like they’re asking or should I just call them and negotiate with them over the phone. Which is best? Thanks a lot.

  5. There is no way to know for sure but I believe it is best to call them. Why? They can hear your sincerity and here that you mean it when you say, “I really appreciate the job offer and really want to join your firm, but (pause) could you do a touch better?” They may say they want to get back to you and rescind the offer pr never get back to you. Would you really want to work for a firm that does that?

  9. Pretty good advice, however with these are general guidelines and you need to be careful not to sound rude. I would recommend the same steps but, leave the sigh sounds away and be professional and diplomatic instead. I try to find out what is market value for the type of work that I do. If I have to make the first offer I make an offer that is 20% more than the market value. After asking a bit more, I settle with a price that we both agree on, instead of being too uptight. Everyone wins. 😉

  11. Thanks for the comment. Not everyone can do what you recommend. The notion here is non-confrontational and just trying to nudge the offer a bit, not get every dollar possible.

  13. Thanks for the reply. Non-confrontational approach has worked for me in negotiations and I believe it’s a valuable approach in general. The best negotiations end with win win situation. It’s not just about making a deal, it’s about making a good deal.

  15. Very good video, adding to my fav list.
    Q:
What if I know the salary range of a job, lets say 70K-78K (Government job, 78K is max).
HR called and offered me the job, and they are offering me with $72K. I used what I have learn from you video, and told them I will call them back.
How, and what should I counter to get $78K. Hint: the person that was in this position is retiring, and he is making $ 83K.

Please help, they are waiting for me to call them back.

How do I respones to get the 78K?

  17. I apologizze for not responding in a timeely way. YouTube did not notify me of the comment being left. Maybe this helps the next person. This video is specifically about moving the needle to improve an offer a bit, not move it to a specific number. You cannot guaranty a specific number as the result of a negotiation. All you can do is say, “I really want to join. The work and opportunity are terrific. Can you see your way clear to ofer $78000? I would accept that and start.”

  19. Thank for the reply sir.
Funny thing is, after I told them I really like the job but I have to think about the salary. They called me back the next day and offered me the full amount. I didn’t even have to ask for it. I think they got worried that they might loss me.

  21. Sometimes, a delay to “think about it” (how many people actually think about it) is enough to make them worried. I’m glad the tactic worked. Good luck!

  31. I believe you say the truth and talk about being their end of life caregiver, that you continued to take time off after that to heal and are ready to return to work. Don’t be self-employed. You are a candidate for networking with people you know to find work. If you join JobSearchCoachingHQ.com, I’ll give you some extra service to make sure you interview well.

  33. Quick question Jeff. .. in your opinion why are African American women offered less money on average, but employers know that black women are more assertive and almost always get the job done.

  35. +Unfinished Business 1. They think they can get away with it, 2. Because salaries for African American ladies are lower and companies make percentage increases over current salary, the offers are lower 3. Overt discrimination those are the biggies

  37. Jeff Altman thanks for the reply. I’m in education, but I’m not a teacher so my pay is not based on a pay scale. Districts will often offer me twenty thousand less than the amount that is the average in my area. They often seem irritated when I negotiate for higher amounts. I have a fear of starting out on the wrong foot at a new job so I often don’t want to negotiate.

  39. +Unfinished Business if men earn more and white men earn more then you have a basis for a law suit IF you can prove comparable work performed AND a lawyer is willing to take the case on contingency
