Stepping Up from Manager to Leader (VIDEO)

Stepping up in class requires a change in behavior, not just a job title.


This video talks about stepping up from manager to leader. To start off, I can't go into every detail about what is necessary in order to prepare yourself to play at the higher level. I'll simply share our story about someone I coached recently that, I believe reflects that.

In this particular case I been working with the guy who is in IT who works as a manager level and they want to move up to Director. They see him clearly in the C suite. What seems to be an issue for him is that too often he is in the weeds. There is a shift that you have to make mentally in order to be a leader within an organization.

It's not something as simple as delegation. It's about coaching people in order to be effective in their new roles because they are stepping up as well while you remove a lot of the burdens that you've taken on for yourself because management has been drilling down on you to manage people to get results. A leader is different. In effect, a leader is a coach for an organization. They think like a coach and teach like a coach. That takes time and effort.

With this person, what I've gotten him to see are that there are situations where he could be asking great questions that would cause people to think proactively. Instead of telling them what to do, he's asking them what they think should be done, explore different options with them, see if they might make good choices like he might make and work from there.

Coaching is not as simple as what I'm describing here. Coaching will help you work in situations a bit differently.
