How Do You Think Someone in This Position Could Make a Real Difference? | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

EP 814 I offer an answer to this obnoxious second interview question.

Summary

The question is, "How do you think someone in this position could make a real difference?" Oooooooooooooh! Drama!

The answer this question is really in the 1st interview where they laid out the role and responsibilities you would have and what their expectations of you are. You have to do a quick mental scan that, hopefully you did before you walked in the door were you thought about, "What's the position all about? How does my background really fit in? What kind accomplished during this job?" That's because they have told you what they are looking for in the 1st interview either to the questions that they have asked you, or outright by talking with you about what their expectations are.

Basically, you can powered it back to them. For example, you're looking at an administrative assistant job. Your future boss is talk with you about keeping his/her calendar, keeping them up to date on what is happening in the office, buffering them from things that they don't want to contend with that they will let you know about. Using those 3 examples, you might answer the question by saying something along the lines of, "I can give you real access to time again, because obviously you are being assaulted by a number of people who are trying to get access to your calendar who you really don't need to see. I'll save you a lot of time. By learning who you want to talk to and when, what your preferences are. . ." You get the idea.

If you work in IT and they have discussed a role where you are responsible for a developing a particular type of application, you could talk in terms of efficiently and effectively developing the code needed in order to do your part of the system, working closely with users to keep them up to speed, understanding their needs, wants and desires, doing it in an efficient way, all within time and budget, all with minimal intervention from you was my boss because I know you have other priorities. I can keep you up-to-date on what's going on, make sure that you know if I need help because of particular problem because I can't resolve the myself, I don't want to have you be surprised. You get the idea again.

So the answer to what they are looking for as an answer for this question is in the 1st interview. You need to spend a little bit of time before thinking about the job, thinking about what their expectations are, so that you are not blindsided by the question.
