Hedge Fund Brainteasers: The Monk’s Morning Routine

EP 830 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter walks you through this math problem that is used in hedge fund interviews.

Summary

I have a fun 1 of those brainteasers for you.

There is a monk who is climbing up the stairs of his temple. He has a very specific morning routine. 1st, he goes up to the middle step and meditates for minute. Then he climbs up 8 steps and listens for a bird singing. Then, he walks down 12 steps and picks up a pebble. He takes one step up, tosses the pebble over his left shoulder and then walks up the remaining steps 3 at the time and that only takes in 9 big steps.

In total, how many steps are there?

The answer is 49 steps.

Here is how it works. He goes up to the middle 1 which we live figure out to step 25. Here's the birds singing on step 33. He picks up a pebble in the 21st step and tosses it on the 22nd he bounds up the remaining 27 steps through the time (remember, 9 big steps). It totals up to 49.
