Connecting with the Interviewer | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

Ep 653 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses connecting with an interviewer.

Connecting with the interviewers you meet with are often the tiebreaker between potential hires

One of the classic pieces of job hunting advice is to make a connection with the interviewer. That doesn't mean that you talk about your respective tennis games, even if that's on their LinkedIn profile. That's something that you can file away if it comes up in the course of conversation (Key phrase: IF it comes up in the conversation).

What really means is how you interact with this person? How do you talk with and has an equal? Not as an inferior being talked to and talked down to by a superior but has an equal?

That's your whole game plan – – to be relaxed and calm enough with this person as a peer would be, as a friend would be. I'm not saying to crack jokes throughout. But he is to be relaxed and calm enough to speak with him as an equal. That is the pivotal goal of connecting with the interviewer

At the end of the day, you may not be hired because you just don't have the skills that they are looking for. That's fine.

However, when there are several people who are well qualified, often is the ability to connect with the interviewers. That is the tiebreaker. They look for someone that they can like and connect with his well. The connection allows them to feel comfortable enough with you so that if they have a choice between you and the shy candidate, they choose you.
