Recognizing the Signals And What to Do | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

Summary

I want to talk to you senior professionals who have just been laid off, or think your job is in trouble.  You know the signals.  I'm not going to go through them all but you know there are problems that your firm or, politically, there is been someone partying over you who doesn't really know you and you know the signal and don't ignore it.

Rather than this being exercise and why you should change jobs, I want to go to the next step.  That is, preparing for the search.  Over the course of time, most execs I talk to have had a lot of branches on the tree and a lot of leaves on the branches.  Invariably, what happens is the leaves start to wither and die; same with the branches.  They are left with the trunk.

For you, I want to encourage you to take some time to figure out what the trunk of your tree is.  What the core element is of what you do, want to do and what your successes have been so that as you start to lay out a marketing campaign for yourself and your capabilities, you can focus in on those as your primary objective in some of the branches and maybe a leaf or 2.  As some of the ancillaries.

As you know from your own experience when hiring, you want to hire exceptional people.  You don't want hire someone else's failure.  By being able to focus in on what you excel at and marketing your capabilities for that, you will go a long way toward finding work faster but it starts with recognizing the signals and making the preparation for that time.

By the way, looking at what the trunk of the tree is, that can include your financials, too. As you start getting the signals of problems, you know what deals have been negotiated previously with the firm and you want to get something comparable or better.  You k now what your financials are like and you know it will take you a while to land something.  Start getting down to the trunk of the tree for your financials. Look to cut off some of the extraneous dead branches Or some of the unnecessary dead branches so you can focus on the core.

The First Things to Do If You Are Laid Off | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses the first two things you need to do if you are laid off.

 

Summary

Let’s talk about that moment in time when you’ve been told that you are going to be laid off.  Maybe, your firm is being acquired.  Maybe businesses just bad.  Whatever the circumstances are, I want you to hear this.

The 1st thing you do is collect names, phone numbers and email addresses from everyone that you can in order to maintain contact in case you need a reference.

You want to make sure that you have the personal information from folks so you can stay in contact with them.  In this way, like I said, if you need a reference, they are available to you.

The next thing you wind up doing is you sit there with your wife, husband, partner, or just yourself. If you live alone and figure out what expenses you can cut back on.  I really mean this.  Working to save money?

Get out your credit card bills. In natural electric bills. Your water bills… All sorts of bills that you have and start to examine what should I be spending my money on.  For example, if you have a mortgage payment. Okay. You’ve got rent. Okay.  We are not talking about saving money there.  There are unnecessary expenses. Almost everyone has.

Cutting back on those expenses NOW. Especially if you’re getting a severance, is so smart.  Doing so, gives you additional staying power in your job search, so that in case the search runs longer than you think it will, you don’t have to take anything out of desperation.

You can interview well. You can look at opportunities for what they are instead of saying, “Oh my God! I need a job!  I really need a job. Help me!  I’ll take anything!”

If you can stay in the job market. If you needed to for an extra 2 months because you cut back on spending, and gives you a huge advantage in the desperation quota.

Again, get everyone’s personal email addresses and phone numbers. Then, from there, figure out where you can cut back on your costs, just in case

 

Do you think employers are trying to help you? You already know you can’t trust recruiters—they tell you as much as they think you need to know to take the job they after representing so they collect their payday.

The skills needed to find a job are different yet complement the skills needed to do a job.

Out of Work Since Last Year? Hustle NOW!

I started in the search business in 1972 and it didn’t take long for me to notice a few simple yet understandable behaviors among employers.

 

They include:

The longer someone is looking for work, the fewer choices they have. Companies start to look at your resume and believe that others have interviewed you and found your skills lacking, so why should they waste their time meeting you?

The longer that someone is out of work the less leverage someone has come salary negotiations. Firms often adopt the attitude of giving you two choices when they make an offer — take it or leave it. They act from the belief that you don’t have many choices (and they are probably right) so they don’t feel a great need to extend themselves.

If you’ve been out of work in your field for a year or longer, it will be hard (or impossible) to re-enter at the same level … if at all!

For those of you whose resumes indicate that you worked for your last employer until almost a year previously, I encourage you to hustle during the next few months to find something – anything — even if it means profound compromise (to you). Once you have been out of work for a year, your choices will become microscopic and the likelihood of your returning to your career as you’ve known it, unlikely.(Think of what offer you would take if you were still unemployed a six months from now. Take that offer today.)

Are You The Target?

If an earthquake had devastated your home, would you sit and complain about it or would you be making new plans?

Too often the first thing people do when their firm is experiencing problems is to sit and mope, complain, do anything other than fight for their jobs or hit the exits. Complaining does nothing. Action does.

If you learn your firm is experiencing financial problems severe enough to put layoffs in the cards or your job in jeopardy here are a few things to do:

If you run a business unit or a company and the numbers disappoint, don’t just take it; make your case to the board, to the president, to anyone who should hear it. Don’t let the numbers stand unchallenged. Make sure people know that it is not unique to your firm and that you have a plan to change things.

If you’re the Average Joe or Josephine, be the “backbone of the organization.” Come in early and leave late. Care about what you do and document everything. Make sure people know how much effort you put in without seeming like a martyr.

If you’re fairly new to the firm when problems occur, become “the eager beaver” by becoming a sponge for knowledge. Ask lots of questions and get advice from everyone important. DO IT NOW!!

If you’re an “old timer” become a work machine. Let everyone see you as important so that they don’t believe that you and your high salary are dispensable.

While all of this is going on, prepare your resume.  Start connecting with people inside of your organization.  See if you can transfer to a division where layoffs are unlikely or outside of your organization so that you can start interviewing before you are fired.
