Stupid Final Interview Mistakes (VIDEO)


It is amazing sometimes what people say and do on interviews. Here, I outline a few stupid final interview mistakes that too many people of me.

Summary

I'm back today with what I call stupid final interview mistakes. To be clear, these are the kind of mistakes that are little bit different than the ones that I have pointed out previously because these are the ones to just killed it off at that moment when the opportunity could be yours. Where you are competing on a final interview, and you just do something dumb. Let me just point out some of the things that people can do that will just shoot themselves in the foot and send the candidacy down the drain. They are in no particular order.

1. You arrive late.

2. You just barely or inappropriately for the interview. I'm looking to tell you how to dress because you may be listening to this at a time when styles are different. I simply say the dressing inappropriately for this audience . . . I use an example from a hedge fund the used to recruit for... They used to hate people who wore ties. If you suddenly were talking to an interview, they got turned off. They used to think of ties is something to catch food on if you are sloppy eater.

3. You start feeling arrogant because you think the job is yours. That attitude starts to leak out. You get too cocky and forget that you might be competing with someone and act like the job is yours. In fact, you are competing. You are competing against another person or people or your competing against, "Let's go back and see if there's someone else." Never treat this as though it is a formality.

I remember one time I was a relatively junior person, 1 of my colleagues had someone on interviews with someone in Westchester New York. The person was there from 8 AM until 5 PM. His final interview is with the head of the function he will be working for. What happens is is that the head of the function asks why he is looking for a job. It's hard to imagine someone delivering a racist moment like this. But he did. The candidate says, "I work with a bunch of slobs and Indians."

How do you expect someone to respond to this? Do you expect is can act like a best friend? No! Suffice to say, he didn't get the job offer, thank goodness. Recognize that you can shoot yourself in the foot by thinking that the job is yours and your arrogance comes out.

4. Your answers to questions are incongruent with things you said previously. As a result, people start to compare notes and go, "He said this. But is now saying this? Something doesn't add up." He makes them hesitate. When firms hesitate, they reject. They know they can trust you.

5. They ask stupid questions of the interview. How many weeks of vacation do I get? Immature stuff that seems ridiculous.

6. They arrived unprepared. MINIMALLY you look at the LinkedIn profile the person you will be meeting with to get an idea of your background. See what they look like if there's a photo there. Do a Google search to see if there's any new news about the organization to see if this is a subject that you want to ask questions about.

7. You start making new demands. This is part of that arrogance thing that people sometimes do. New demands make firm scratched her head and wonder, "What's with this person? I don't get it. We've been talking about this all along and now they bring this up? They ask for $20,000 more? No explanation? They just up the price?"

8. They are too casual and forget that there still competing. I mentioned this on a video and is the notion . . . It came from the story where represented someone for position, the firm flew him out and he is talking with his future boss. She asked him a question, everything had been going so well for so long in this interview for such a hard to find skill and experience. He is 1 of the few people in the world who have this background. His response to 1 of her questions was to say, "I'll talk with you about that when I come on board." She thought this was ridiculous and rejected him. Rightly so.

Recognize that you are always competing. You're always doing something to sell yourself into the role or cause you to be rejected. Don't get lazy. Don't get arrogant. Don't become casual and never EVER think that the job is in the bag.

Changing careers when you are over 60 doesn’t have to be difficult. I did it. This is what I did.

Summary

Someone asked me about changing careers at 60. I'm someone who did it a little bit later so it's part of the title . . . "Changing Careers at 60… Or Later."

And I took the approach of I maintain my existing career in search and started to explore coaching more fully during that time. I did training. I did practice. I worked with a number of clients. I had a very full schedule and that's really one of the ways that you can make that kind of a change . . . Is by experimenting with it and doing it on the side. Doing it in a real way where you're talking to people about it and you're actually doing the work in that field, doing it as a side hustle so that in this way you can see what it's really like.

How do you decide what to do?

One of the things I found it is true is that a lot of people wind up being more frightened about taking action than actually take action and discoverfrom their own experience. Doing things is a side hustle, frankly, you've been thinking about certain types of work, certain types of careers, certain types of businesses for the longest time. And these are the things to experiment with.

I want to say "experiment with." Because as long as you are not spending they asked sums of money to do it, it's not like you are buying a McDonald's franchise. Right now you're basically doing something that generally leverages your previous work or deals with a previous passion or passions that you have and seeing if you can create an adequate market for it. Maybe you'll only do it on the side until you retire. That's OK. It doesn't have to be your primary source of income . . . yet, does it?

But what you can do is explore one of these things, try them out, talk with people about them, particularly people who are in different markets than the one that you might be entering in different parts of the country.

LinkedIn is great for that, right? Just contact them and say, "Look you work in one area of the country and I work in another. I'm thinking of doing something similar. Can I pick a brain for a couple of minutes about the challenges you had at the beginning?"

Look for someone that's more of a contemporary then someone who is 20 years your junior who will understand some of the existing problems in the business. They'll be able to talk from the perspective of someone who's a contemporary age wise, and give you advice that makes more sense. .

They don't want to talk? It's a big world! There are plenty of people who will be willing to talk to you; just keep digging. You'll find folks to talk with.

So, again, the ideal way is to try it as a side hustle, to explore things on the side. Yes, you'll be working hard at it. But you know you like this other thing and it's going to be your leverage when you hit whatever the retirement age is to supplement Social Security, supplement any pensions that you might have.

That's going to be able to help you earn a living and enjoy your life.

Cutting the Line to Get Ahead

In this video, Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter offers a strategy for you to get ahead once you have your next job.

So many people believe in making incremental job changes and doing the slow, working your way up the ladder thing. That may work for some people but a lot of you can be doing much more.

I want to remind you, using Barack Obama as an example, there is someone who is in assemblyman who became US Senator and immediately began running for president. Maybe you sat in the Senate for less than a year before she went out campaigning. He wound up working the system in a way that served him many of you believe it serve the country and if you don't. This is not about politics. However, I am to look at him from a career perspective as being someone who made quick enormous jumps that allowed him to advance.

This is an easy work and it certainly wasn't for him. Certainly it would be for anyone is able to take advantage of this.

If you're out of work trying to find something, this isn't a strategy for you. However, if you or someone who has something right now, this is the time to start looking for that next big leap so that you're not changing jobs incrementally for the $2000 raise, the $5000 raise. You are going for the big jumps. You're going for the big moves... And you have the experience to back it up.

In politics, is pretty common for presidents to be younger than senators or congressmen , but in business. We look at our progression as being one slow step up the ladder to another, until, eventually, we are supposed to hit the top. It doesn't work that way, doesn't it?

Let's not kid ourselves. You are not going to incrementally work your way up the ladder. You may need to start a business. You may need to take advantage of your connections and keep building networks after you have landed in order to take this big leap. However, you do it, you just gotta do in order to get that to the top faster, rather than on that slow boat.

Sell Me This Unusable Pen | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

Summary

You know every once in a while you hear about ridiculous interview questions and I read this one and I couldn't help myself.I was going to go on the rest of my work day but I decide to respond to the question, "Sell me this unusable pen." Now you know I think it's a trap question but if it isn't you've just learned something about your potential boss here that you're an idiot. Do you really want to work for a company that wants to test you by selling something that's dogshit? I'm being that blunt about it. If you've watched videos before I don't use profanity but at the end of the day I think it's really useful to be able to look someone square in the eye and say, "no." I want to sell a usable pen. I'm never going to sell a product that's crap. If that's the way you think of your product and the way you want me to work., I'm not the right person for you and we can end the interview now.

But if you want me to sell something that works well, is a great product, something that we're proud of. I'm happy to sell it for you right now. Can we switch gears here because I don't want to go into this sort of mentality where you have the expectation that I could sell just any piece of crap known to mankind. I can't. I can't sell garbage. I can sell something that's good but I can't sell crap.

Doing that, you have to be prepared for the follow up but you've instructed them on something and you basically smacked this person in the face but, I think, in a smart way. You may not get the job and frankly you may not have gotten the job if he played along with them.

But I think by demonstrating spine, by demonstrating guts, this is male or female her . . . I did fairly strong presentation. But as a woman you can present yourself in the same sort of way as well. You know it's not rough. It's really easy to be docile in compliant, male or female here. It's tough to show the spine because there's a pleasure to be compliant. Don't be a little worm. Go out there and basically say, "I can't sell garbage and I won't sell garbage. If you think that of your product, I'm not the right person for you if you have some pride in what you do,, if you have some pride in the product the service that you sell, let me sell something like that right now and let's go forward. I think that's the ideal way to present.
